SEMINAR AGENDA:

Registration and Continental Breakfast
7:50 AM
Welcome by Seminar Chairman
8:00 AM
"Shrinkage Control for Portland Cement Concrete"
Bill McCord, Euclid Chemical Company
The presentation will cover both shrinkage reduction and shrinkage compensation methods and testing. The presentation will also compare results in portland cement concrete using different methods to reduce or eliminate shrinkage in concrete.
9:00 AM
"Structural Systems and Applications"
Ken Kozlowski & Dave Sheldon, LEED AP, Ceco Concrete Construction, LLC
10:00 AM
"Concrete Reflective Surfaces to Reduce Lighting and Effect of Heating and Cooling"
Jamie Farny, Portland Cement Association
Concrete pavements are naturally reflective, so these surfaces require less artificial lighting and can help reduce urban heat island effect. With the choice of concrete as a structural system, you can specify materials, mixtures, and proportions for optimum performance, then further improve the parking lot design with appropriate landscaping and lighting. Learn how to make informed decisions in each of these areas to create high-performing concrete pavements that can add to a project’s sustainability and contribute toward credit in green rating systems.
11:00 AM
"High-Strength Concrete"
Mark Luther, FACI, Holcim (US) Inc.
With natural aggregates, 12,000 psi has been achieved in ready-mixed concrete across much of the United States; and with specialty aggregates, concrete strengths exceeding that of steel have been produced. Key points are reviewed toward producing high-strength concrete reliably. Although attention is paid to the commonly available cementitious materials and to their individual and combined capabilities, mentioned also are some of the emerging cementitious materials that present a potential for use in high-strength concrete.
11:45 AM
Lunch
12:45 PM
"Innovations for Concrete Pavement Load Transfer Devices"
Craig Dahlgren, P.E., Greenstreak Group, Inc.
Move over round dowels… plate dowels are the most strategic reinforcement option for slab-on-grade construction and saw cut contraction joints. Plate dowels provide load transfer across a joint while accommodating axial and lateral concrete shrinkage and horizontal slab movement. Plate dowel systems are engineered to optimize the use of steel in the joint and are easy to install - giving slab owners economical, long term, maintenance-free joints with less contractor labor.
1:45 PM
"Energy Performance of Concrete Structures"
Lionel Lemay, P.E., S.E., LEED AP, National Ready Mixed Concrete Association
This session describes how innovative building systems such as tilt-up walls, insulating concrete form systems, concrete floor systems, concrete roof systems, and concrete pavements can improve energy performance of buildings. Attendees will learn how thermal mass and insulation are combined to increase effective R-value and reduce air infiltration of the exterior envelopes resulting in lower energy bills and improved occupant comfort. Results of research are reported that compare thermal performance of eleven different structural wall systems including: insulated cast-in-place, insulating concrete forms, tilt-up, wood and steel frame. The results illustrate the benefits of thermal mass, depending on climatic conditions for most of North America.
2:45 - 3:00 PM
Adjournment
